For many years I have thought about the healing power of the drum, and the philosophy I have come to is that the drum is a kind of trinity. The body of the drum, which comes from a tree, contains the living spirit of that tree. Great care is taken to make sure that the wood of the drum is alive. And the same is true of the skin; whether it is the tanned hide of a goat or buffalo, it also contains a spirit that is alive. And when you join these two spirits with that of the person playing the drum, the result is an irresistable force, a trinity, a balance that gives the drum its healing power. ~ Babatunde Olatunji
